Ryan Reynolds is more than just an actor and comedian icon, he’s also a partial owner of a football club and surprisingly to many at the time, his choice of club was Wrexham FC which he bought alongside Philadelphia’s Always Sunny star Rob McElhenny. .
It drew more attention to the club than they might have realized it would and now this unexpected story is being chronicled as a new documentary series – Welcome to Wrexham is coming from FX and going live. Disney Plus in the UK, which gives us a look at what the club was like when Hollywood came along.

Welcome to Wrexham that premiered American broadcast service Hulu On Wednesday 24 August 2022.
The docuseries premiered in the UK the next day, Thursday 25th August, being available exclusively on Disney Plus.
Filming for the project began in December 2020, with the film crew attending the owners’ first visit to the team at Wrexham vs Maidenhead United FC in October 2021.

The Welsh Lower League football team and their fans were stunned when Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenny stepped in to buy and manage the club – as did the rest of us. Welcome to Wrexham will show us what it’s been like for everyone involved, and what it’s been like since you relinquished ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney.
Why did Ryan Reynolds buy Wrexham Football Club?
While we like to think that the duo bought a football club in the lower league just because they were bored, we haven’t heard much about why they decided to go for it.
We’re sure the ins and outs of how this happened will be revealed in the docu series, but we know the couple take the responsibility very seriously. “We want to be great ambassadors for the club, to introduce the club to the world and to be a global force,” Reynolds said, speaking to Trust members late last year.
“We want to pack this stadium back together,” McElhenney added. “I want people to be very excited to see the club’s rise… We have to think about Wrexham the way Manchester think about Manchester United.”
How much did Ryan Reynolds pay for Wrexham?
We don’t know how much Reynolds drowned in the club himself, but we do know that he and Rob handed them a $2 million investment between them, so either way it was a huge amount of money.
Has Ryan Reynolds visited Wrexham?
It took Ryan and Rob a while to make the trip to Wrexham, COVID to blame, but they finally got to see them play on October 26, 2021. Both stars were in attendance to watch them play the National League game against Maidenhead United at York Road. Reynolds took it Instagram To show how invested he was watching the match – unfortunately, they lost 3-2.
