Netflix’s latest psychological drama, Echoes, has captivated viewers with its star cast, thrilling plot, and “Evil Twin” formula.
Michelle Monaghan plays identical twins Lenny and Gina McCleary, who swap lives every year on their birthday.
However, their scheme soon unfolds as Jenna (as Lenny) goes missing, forcing the real Lenny to return to their sleepy hometown and confront some harsh truths about their past.
For a show that is described as a limited series – eg, It is for one season only – Netflix”The Echoes end on a somewhat ambiguous note, with a creepy ending that might leave some scratches in their heads.
So, is it Lenny or Gina in that mysterious final scene? Read on to find out everything you need to know about the end of the Echo.
End echoes explained
The McCleary twins are left in tatters in the series’ final episode, as their social exchange is revealed, leaving the entire town of Mount Echo disgusted with their behaviour. Additionally, authorities are narrowing down their role in the fire of the old church years ago and the recent death of Dylan James.
Even if the police fail to prove the two sisters’ murder, Sheriff Floss points out that they committed many other crimes through their co-life, not least fraud and polygamy.
At this point, all Jenna wants is to break free from her controlling sister, who blames her for getting her into this unsalvageable mess, but Lenny remains adamant that they can only fix everything if they stick together. The situation comes to a head at the waterfall at Mount Echo, which Jenna throws herself into when it becomes clear that she won’t be able to live the life she wants as long as Lenny exists.
The next day, Lenny ran up to her using one of the fake IDs that was intended for Jenna and Dylan’s escape, but had a strange encounter as she passed airport security. The guard tells her that a woman who looks like her flew from the same airport only yesterday, which suggests that Gina – who was presumed dead by the authorities (although her body was never found) – may have survived her fall and embarked on her plan to start a new life in Kansas.
Lenny would like to go further, as he travels to Australia. While the twins are scattered, Sheriff Floss is left with a hard drive that shows the two sisters’ video diaries, giving them plenty to go on with their ongoing investigation.
The series ends with a leap into the near future, when Gina (and Lenny) LA-based husband Charlie—who was aware of the swap at some point in their marriage—writes a book about the McCleary sisters. In the bookshop, someone asks a question from behind the crowd who looks suspiciously like either Lenny or Gina. Later the same day, Charlie came home to find one of the sisters in his house.
Far from being annoyed by the sudden intrusion, Charlie explains that he never changes the locks after their marriage dissolution in the hope that one or both of the sisters will return to him.
Which twin in the last scene of Echoes?
While McCleary, who is speaking to him, speaks with an L.A. Gina accent rather than Southern tie Lenny, Charlie later expresses uncertainty about which brother to speak with.
This is only escalated when McCleary claims at his house that she did not attend the reading of the book, which means that either the sisters have returned to Los Angeles or she is lying in an attempt to manipulate him.
“I will find out, you know, who you are,” he told her.
She answers, “Maybe I don’t know anymore.”
When asked why she’s back, Jenna/Lenny adds (delete as appropriate): “There’s a lot of accounts to settle, Charlie. I thought I should start with you.”
The comment notes that this visit is not friendly – in fact, it could be interpreted as a threat to Charlie’s life – which offers a hint about McCleary’s sister we might be dealing with.
After all, the sister most closely associated with their deceitful ways was Lenny, who enjoyed jogging between her own distinct truth as well as the power she wielded over her sister.
Based on this information, organizing a series of revenge plots against those who wronged her – a “settlement of scores” – sounds more like Lenny’s move than something Gina would do.
Of course, Jenna proved that she could be quite the planner too, having nearly succeeded in putting Lenny behind bars by planting evidence. But given the enormous trouble she went through to escape her life, it seemed unlikely that she would ever return to her under any circumstances.
